Ionica (1,200 employees) was a national telephone network licensed by the UK Government to compete with BT in the economically strategic “last mile” of the residential & small business market using entirely new microwave technology conceived and designed by Ionica & subcontracted to Nortel for detailed implementation, manufacture and supply to Ionica, and licensing and distribution elsewhere. The technology is currently used in several countries in South America.
The network also used entirely original in-house designed customer billing and management software, which was subcontracted to Steve Edwards CEO of Geneva for development, and then distributed worldwide. The customer software technology is currently in use throughout the world in competitive telecoms markets, Geneva having been sold by SE for $1,500 million.
